Boriello was used as a 73rd minute substitute as Milan were beaten into 4th place by a Simic own goal and a Milan Baros strike, with Jon Dahl Tomasson's consolation goal not enough to take the game past 90 minutes. The tournament was won by Bayern Munich, who beat Real Madrid by 2-1 in the Final. Blooded early by coach Carlo Ancelotti, this was Boriello's debut season in Milan after impressing at Treviso and he would stay at the San Siro for another 5 years, however with appearances hard to come by the striker embarked on a journeyman career which resulted in 7 Italy international caps and a second stint at Milan in later years. The shirts from this match are particularly interesting as they feature the numbering style from 2000-02 which was not then used again with a new style coming in for the start of the competitive season
